Why study Communications at the UPB?

Companies and organizations go through a continuous transformation, in a process of adapting to the new changes produced by the revolution of the digital media, globalization, the crisis of the classic State-Nation model, democratization of information, among other modern social issues. Therefore, a bachelor in communications is required to help organizations adapt quickly to the latest market and communicational processes.
For these reasons, communications have taken a special magnitude in our society and in time. Considering the already mentioned context and given the new world trends, the UPB proposes a study plan that will grant the student a complete and excellent academic training in the field of communications which will allow him to perform with professionalism and high proficiency in private and public institutions, national and international markets, in the context of the digital era.


Profile of the Communications Bachelor

The Bachelor of Communication is a bilingual professional (English or French) with the skills to:

  • Raise and solve communication problems in the social context.
  • Plan and manage communication processes using communication technology.
  • Effectively create information for different audiences.
  • Organize the public relations of private and public institutions.
  • Manage and operate mass media.
  • Formulate corporate image design and communication strategies for internal and external audiences.


Labour Market

The Communications Bachelor is trained to work in:

  • Communication management of public and private companies in the industrial, commercial, and services sectors, at the national and international levels.
  • Own advertising and communication companies for the design, execution, or advice of corporate image.
  • Public sector at the level of governmental and non-governmental organizations.
  • Research and teaching.

History of the program

In 2004 the bachelor in Communications degree is launched, with 7 students, as a career entirely focused on corporative communications. In 2017 there was a redesign of the plan of study. The change, headed by Mariana Lcacunza, with the support of Andres Laguna and Cecilia Romero, expanded his business vision, including sociocultural and transmedia studies.
This, to adapt to the curricula to the new world and globalized market. Thus, the UPB Communicator has new methods to perform with excellence that characterizes the institution. Today, the bachelor in communications program has 71 students.

Mariana Lacunza Ph.D.

She earned her doctorate at The Ohio State University. Graduated in Social Communications from the Bolivian Catholic University, she specializes in the area of Cultural Studies, with an emphasis on Latin American film and literature. She has written about how digital support in Bolivian cinema is being used for contemporary reconfiguration of communities and subjectivities. ounder of the Transmedia Communication Laboratory (LCT) and researcher of the (LIComH) Laboratory in Research in Communication and Humanities Studies has published for the Journal Research and Development of the UPB and is co-author of a contemporary Bolivian film book, together with Dr. Andrés Laguna. She is currently a member of the LASA (Latin American Studies Association) and SCMS (Society for Cinema and Media Studies) and researches the work of the Bolivian group SocavonCine, raising the possibility of a collective author cinema that explores marginal subjectivities around the use of digital media.
