Expertise
  • He specializes is theoretical and applied econometrics. More specifically, his applied research focuses on the development of simultaneous equations models with latent variables for the analysis of poverty (monetary and multidimensional), inequality and human development.

Professional activity
  • He is currently Dean of Research at UPB, Research Associate at the Oxford Poverty & Human Development Initiative (OPHI), a research center in Economics in the Department of International Development at the University of Oxford, and a Fellow of the Global Labor Organization.
  • Previously at UPB, he was the Head of the Economics Career and the Director of the Center for Economic and Business Research (CIEE). At Oxford University, he was a Research Officer at OPHI and participated in multidimensional poverty measurement and analysis projects based on the dual cutoff counting method (Alkire-Foster). He was a Research Assistant at the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) and at the Applied Economics Laboratory of the University of Geneva (Switzerland).
  • He carries out theoretical research on the properties, stability and robustness of the measures resulting from the Alkire-Foster method, as well as empirical research focused on the UNDP-OPHI Global Multidimensional Poverty Index, the best-known application of this method. He continues to be a consultative member of this team to assist governments of countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America in the design and evaluation of anti-poverty programs. In his research, he also analyzes patterns of human development and inequality based on Amartya Sen's Capabilities Approach, as well as analyses in the labor and education markets.
  • He is the author and co-author of several articles in journals including the Journal of Development Economics, World Development, Review of Income & Wealth, Latin American Research Review, as well as book chapters edited by Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press.
